Empathy and open dialogue in leadership

I recently presented at a conference on resilience in leadership, and a key question from the audience was, “How can team members approach their leader if they are concerned about the leader’s mental health and its impact in the workplace?” This question underscores the importance of empathy and open dialogue in leadership.

Empathy and Open Dialogue

Empathy is essential in addressing mental health concerns within the workplace. Leveling the playing field on mental health means being brave and having the courage to express your care and concern to your leaders about their welfare. Be curious – offer your time and your open mind to listen, support and solution-seek with them. Leaders are human too and senior leadership is often lonely.

Good leaders know their team members well enough to understand their backstory and present-time stresses. This understanding means that variations in mood and productivity are seen in a broader context. The days of hiding mental health issues are over – one of the greatest takeaways from COVID, where we all faced similar challenges around resilience and significant life changes at the same time, which was a great leveller.

Adapting Leadership Roles

The Danish Design Centre’s approach during COVID involved putting down leadership roles on days when leaders simply couldn’t manage and choosing another leader like a mentor. This model highlighted the benefits of adaptability and mutual support within teams. Leaders who demonstrate vulnerability and adaptability encourage a culture of trust and collaboration, which is vital for mental health.

Benefits and Risks of Remote Work

The shift to remote work during the pandemic has brought both benefits and challenges. Setting digital boundaries and accommodating flexibility can make you an employer of choice, especially for women and parents who have greatly benefited from remote working.

Remote work offers flexibility that helps balance professional and personal life, which is crucial for mental health. However, it also presents risks such as feelings of isolation and the blurring of work-life boundaries. Leaders need to be aware of these risks and offer appropriate support. Regular check-ins, virtual team-building activities, and promoting a healthy work-life balance are essential strategies.

Prioritising Mental Health

Fostering good mental health remains a key responsibility for leaders in their organisations. Open, regular, and vulnerable conversations will encourage a healthy workplace culture where everyone feels supported on both good days and not-so-good days. Truly capable leaders trust their team enough to participate fully on their own behalf.

Building Resilient Workplaces

Building on our last discussion about the pressures on leaders, let's continue prioritising mental health in our leadership practices. By fostering empathy, adaptability, and support, we can create a resilient and thriving workplace. Leaders who prioritise mental health set the tone for their organisations, creating environments where employees feel valued and supported.

Strategies for Leaders to Foster Mental Health

  1. Regular Mental Health Check-Ins: Schedule regular one-on-one meetings to discuss mental health and well-being. This shows that you care and are available to support your team.

  2. Promote Work-Life Balance: Encourage taking breaks, setting boundaries, and respecting off-hours to prevent burnout.

  3. Provide Resources: Ensure that employees know how to access mental health resources including EAP services, counselling, and wellness programs.

  4. Create a Supportive Culture: Foster an environment where mental health is openly discussed without stigma. Lead by example by sharing your own experiences and coping strategies.

  5. Flexible Work Arrangements: Offer flexible schedules and remote work options to help employees manage their personal and professional lives effectively.

Empathy, adaptability, and open communication are the cornerstones of fostering mental health in the workplace. Leaders play a crucial role in setting the tone and creating a supportive environment where everyone can thrive. By prioritising mental health, we not only support our teams but also build resilient, productive, and successful organisations.
